About Brix Liquids

Working With Brix Liquids

Cargille Laboratories can supply liquids to cover the entire Brix range from 0 – 85 % sucrose solution @ 20°C ( Brix). Our Brix Liquids are ideal for calibrating your Brix refractometers. Unlike water based sucrose solutions, our liquids are extremely stable, which means that one Brix liquid can be used as a calibration fluid for years.
It is advisable to select a Cargille oil (standard) close to the Brix value of your samples or select a liquid higher and lower to surround your Brix working area. Refractometer manufacturers advise zeroing out with distilled water as zero Brix. See Cargille’s Refractive Index Certified Water

Brix Value – Temperature Changes

When working with Cargille Standard Series Refractive Index Liquids to calibrate hand held refractometers and refractometers without temperature controls, it is important to know the temperature because liquids change refractive index with temperature.

Take the temperature as close to the refractometer as possible, then refer to the Brix Temperature Compensation Charts for that liquid and see the Brix value for the temperature at which you are working. Make sure you have a Brix Temperature Compensation Charts for each of the refractive index liquids you are ordering as the information is different for each refractive index.

Relationship of Brix Tolerance to Refractive Index Tolerance

Values on the following Brix tolerance chart are based on the ICUMSA Chart for % Brix ( Sucrose ) at 589.3 nm at 20 °C. In between Brix values will have proportionately in between Brix tolerances.

Cargille Brix Chart

Select the Brix value that you want to work with and order the refractive index shown in results. Refractive Index Liquids are calibrated at 25°C but Cargille has calculated these values using the temperature coefficients to provide you with the Brix values shown at 20°C. Brix values are calculated using ICUMSA (2000).

    Letters of Certification

If you would like the liquids you are ordering to be certified, please order a Letter of Certification at the time you place your liquid order. We will list multiple items ordered on one Letter of Certification providing the liquids are all from the same category, for example: all Refractive Index Liquids, or all Master Calibration Liquids, or all Laser Liquids. If you are ordering more than one category of liquids, then you will need a different Letter of Certification for that product.
